Forestry program 𖧧⋆˚࿔

PCRP was awarded an Urban & Community Forestry (UCF) grant through the U.S. Forest Service (USFS) to build community resilience and food security in the CNMI. Our efforts are focused on planting native and fruiting trees, removing hazardous trees, and eliminating the invasive African tulip (Spathodea campanulata). In addition, our Forestry Program is working to increase local capacity through job training and expanding local tree nurseries with our partners at DLNR Rota Forestry, Northern Marianas College (NMC) Cooperative Research Extension & Education Service (CREES), and local private nurseries.

PCRP Forestry will be working with the community at residential and public spaces, including schools, parks, homesteads and other private lands to increase availability of native trees and productive fruiting trees on Saipan, Tinian, and Rota. Stay tuned for opportunities to work with us in your community!

INVASIVE TREE REMOVAL INITIATIVE

African Tulip Tree, Spathodea campanulata

  • The African tulip tree (Spathodea Campanulata) is a moderate to large in size (20–80 ft) deciduous tree identified by its dark green leaves, pale bark, and buttressed trunk. This tree is native to the tropical dry forests and savannas of Africa. It has large, red-orange, scentless flowers and black capsules that contain seeds with wide, papery wings.

  • The African tulip tree is a major threat to CNMI's environment and wildlife. These trees spread rapidly through wind-carried seeds, forming dense thickets that take over both disturbed areas and native forests. Their aggressive growth crowds out the native plants that local pollinators and wildlife depend on, making their removal crucial for protecting our island's biodiversity. They produce insect killing compounds for defense against herbivory—but also harm native pollinators like bees and butterflies!

African tulip wood is soft and prone to rot. These trees may threaten nearby structures, especially in stormy weather!

  • PCRP Forestry offers FREE African Tulip tree removal. If you are interested, please fill out the Tree Removal Application Form.
